Diurnal Cycle
2020
Kristinn E. Hrafnsson

Cycles are repeated movements, back and forth, by an object. Every day cycles occur in the tides, between high and low tide. A cycle may be a regular movement that recurs, like a sine wave, which is a wave of continuous motion. A cycle takes place around a balance point or mean. It may also be called a regular cycle. One cycle is a complete movement – whether up and down, back and forth, or over a period.
Over the years Kristinn E. Hrafnsson has been exploring phenomena such as time, space, energy and equilibrium. He has also shown a particular interest in studying the impact of the heavenly bodies and other environmental factors on our daily lives. This work is concerned with diurnal cycles, i.e. regular changes that take place in nature during a 24-hour period, in step with the earth’s orbit around the sun. Such phenomena are both stable, due to repetition, and changeable, as each cycle is unique. The sculpture we see here on the wall denotes a specific cycle, but it can also represent any diurnal cycle.
