Íslandslag

Jóhannes Kjarval er einn af meisturum íslenskrar myndlistar. Hann braut blað í íslenskri listasögu með málverkum sínum af íslenskri náttúru, nærmyndum af landinu, þar sem mosi og hraun eru í forgrunni en sjóndeildarhringurinn er hátt á myndfletinum. Verkið Íslandslag er eitt af þessum frumlegu verkum. Hugsanlega byrjaði Kjarval á því sem landslagsmynd en breytti síðan verulega með því að bæta við verkið íslenskum plöntum sem svífa fremst á myndfletinum, andliti og hvítri englumlíkri veru sem virðast spretta út úr gljúfrinu á miðri mynd. Eru þessir gljúfrabúar náttúruvættir eða guðlegar verur? Er það ef til vill andlit jarðar sem Kjarval hefur greint í náttúrunni og birtist okkur á myndfletinum? Eitt er víst: verkið er dæmi um mjög persónulega úrvinnslu listamannsins, táknmyndir hans og fantasíur sem hann notaði til að túlka þá drauma og sýnir sem sagnir, þjóðsögur og náttúrufyrirbæri blésu honum í brjóst og eru meðal meginþáttanna í list Kjarvals.

 

Jóhannes Kjarval is one of the masters of Icelandic art. He caused a sea change in the history of Icelandic art with his paintings of Icelandic nature, close-ups of the land, with moss and lava in the foreground while the horizon is raised high up on the picture plane. The work Icelandic Melody is one of these original works. Kjarval possibly began it as a landscape, but then radically changed it by adding to it Icelandic plants drifting in the foreground of the picture space, as well as a face and a white angel-like creature that seems to spring from the canyon in the middle of the image. Are these canyon dwellers natural phenomena or divine creatures? Is it perhaps the face of the earth that Kjarval discerned in nature and which appears on the picture space? One thing is certain: the work is an example of a highly personal artistic process, the symbols and fantasies that he used to interpret the dreams and visions that myths, legends and natural phenomena inspired in him and which compose the main elements in Kjarval’s art.
