Iron, Flax, Coal, and Chalk: New Works by Þóra Sigurðardóttir

The exhibition brings together recent drawings, prints, and assemblages that follow on artist Þóra Sigurðardóttir’s decades-long preoccupation with the grid as an elemental structure against which lines, marks, and objects are placed, creating tension between rectilinear order and natural randomness. Among the works included in the exhibition are several series of copper and aluminium plate etchings executed at artist residencies in Berlin and Venice. Working with monochromatic inks, the artist masterfully achieves infinite subtle variations in the etched lines, tonal scale, and compositional balance of each unique work. A series of paintings made by the direct application of charcoal, graphite, ink, pencil, and chalk on raw linen offer insight into another aspect of the artist’s exploration of the play between order and chance.

At the core of the installation is a series of architectonic steel structures with shelves and vitrines containing both found and sculpted objects. Taken together, the installation considers how the artist’s sensibility is informed by the natural world and how, in turn, she responds to it.
