Stay and turn to stone!

2.9.2025

The National Gallery of Iceland and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra are joining forces once again with the school concert Stay and turn to stone!, where Iceland’s rich folktale heritage comes to life through storytelling, music, and visual art.

The concert evokes the spirit of old times, when people gathered in the communal living room to hear stories that were exciting, entertaining, frightening, or funny. Listeners will encounter talking animals, magical creatures, ghosts, trolls, elves, and the hidden people. Actor Ólafur Egill Egilsson will serve as host and storyteller, guiding the audience through the program and leading them in communal singing.

The concert will be complemented by an exhibition of selected folktale-inspired works from the National Gallery’s collection, on view at the Culture House on Hverfisgata. In addition, the museum’s education department has produced a high-quality publication to accompany the program, designed as a valuable resource for teachers at all school levels.
