Recently, the Viljandi Memorial Fund made a generous donation to the National Gallery of Iceland: a large epic drawing in three parts by Sigurður Ámundason (b. 1986) titled Raw Days of Gluttony and Fury. The work measures 200 × 900 cm and was created between 2023 and 2024 using colored pencil, ballpoint pen, and ink on paper. It was produced specifically for the exhibition After the Sun – Forecasts from the North, which was presented at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in New York State and at Gammel Strand in Copenhagen. The exhibition addressed the environmental threats facing humankind.
Sigurður Ámundason has been drawing since childhood and is known for large-scale drawings in which he explores human interaction and the lack of communication between people. In this work, the imagery depicts human figures merging with and struggling against nature. According to the artist, the title refers to the present moment—a stark description of the current condition, expressed in the hope that the future will be kinder, more understanding, and freer from self-destructive competition.
The National Gallery of Iceland greatly appreciates the goodwill and thoughtfulness shown through this gift. Over the years, the museum has received many donations from artists and supporters; these form the backbone of the collection and represent invaluable support for the nation’s art museum.
