Visual Literacy – Sjónarafl
The National Gallery of Iceland has published new educational resources focusing on the development of visual literacy skills. The resources are part of a larger project called Sjónarafl, which the museum’s Education Department has been developing over the past several years. This publication is the result of that work.
Sjónarafl aims to systematically connect the teaching of visual literacy and art history with the school system and to enhance students’ knowledge of the nation’s cultural history and heritage. Developing visual literacy also strengthens skills in communication, active listening, conceptual understanding and critical thinking.
The Sjónarafl educational project empowers participants to understand and engage with visual information and with the world as it appears before them. The programme makes systematic use of discussion and inquiry-based teaching methods, giving participants ample opportunity to express themselves and describe or interpret what they see. Over time, participants acquire valuable tools that enable them to explore and appreciate art in all its forms. Each museum visit or lesson focuses on just two artworks, with up to half an hour devoted to examining, discussing and reflecting on each work through active student participation.
The visual literacy training draws on selected works from the National Gallery of Iceland’s collection. The educational resources have been developed specifically with teachers in mind, so that any teacher can use the material in the classroom or visit the museum as part of their teaching. The resources are based on international research and established teaching methods in visual literacy.
