ARTIST OF THE NATION

A WEB EXHIBITION OF SELECTED WORKS BY Ásgrímur Jónsson

Ásgrímur Jónsson gave the Icelandic nation over 700 oil and watercolour paintings, some of them incomplete, over a thousand drawings and 150 sketchbooks, as well as a number of incomplete works from different periods. Ásgrímur's work is varied and can be classified e.g. as folklore, landscape, city landscape, daily life and still life. The online exhibition Artist of the Nation contains selected works from the following categories:

  • Folklore – where the artist decorates Icelandic folklore and fairy tales
  • Landscape – where  the motifs are mainly from Húsafell and Þingvellir
  • Cityscape – showing motifs from Reykjavík and surroundings

Each category is accompanied by a short text in order to deepen the viewer's understanding of the works.

Introducing the work of Ásgrímur Jónsson and his role in the history of Icelandic art is an important task for the National Gallery of Iceland, including this exhibition.
