Erla Þórarinsdóttir 1955-

LÍ-5654

Erla Þórarinsdóttir studied at Konstfack, Stockholm 1976–81, during which time she spent one semester in Amsterdam as a guest student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Erla is generally deemed to be influenced by neo-expressionism; she was one of the artists who took part in the revitalisation of painting in the early 1990s. Initially Erla’s art was most influenced by the Italian Transavanguardia movement. Erla has sought inspiration inter alia in the religions of the world and shared human memory; she has also explored the inner world of ideas in connection with culturally-specific myths and symbols. The artist has not worked exclusively on canvas: she has also engaged in performance art and installations, three-dimensional modelling and sculpture, photography and book art.
