In 1928, the National Gallery of Iceland received as a gift 24 landscape paintings, likely from the 18th century by an unknown artist. All of them bear inscriptions linking the subject matter to Iceland, for example Eyjafjallajökull and Almannagjá; however, it is clear that the artist can hardly have visited Iceland, as little in these works resembles the Icelandic landscape.

In collaboration with The Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum in Svalbarðseyri the aim is to shed light on these rare and unusual paintings and to investigate their origin, history, condition, and subject matter.
