Icons from the Ukraine
The rich cultural heritage of Ukrainian icon painting will be presented in an exhibition of works from the collection of the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv. With a focus on Christian painting, the works in the exhibition span the period from the late 12th to the early 19th century, tracing the development of Ukrainian art from the early influence of Byzantine culture and, later, that of Gothic and Renaissance art. The Baroque era brought new influences on Ukraine’s national culture, characterized by the introduction of secular motifs, rich color palettes, and magnificent decorative embellishment.
The exhibition is a collaboration among the National Gallery, the National Museum of Iceland, and the National Art Museum of Ukraine to promote cultural exchange and understanding.
