24-Hour Screening of The Clock on the Long Thursday

We warmly welcome you to a 24-hour screening of Christian Marclay’s The Clock (2010) on the Good Thursday, May 29.

The National Gallery of Iceland will be open from 10:00 AM on May 29 until 5:00 PM on May 30.

Marclay’s video work is composed of thousands of film clips—both black and white and in color—collected over a three-year period. Each clip references a specific time, either through dialogue or by showing a timekeeping device—a clock, a watch, an hourglass, a sundial, or a blinking alarm clock. Arranged in chronological order, the video spans a full 24 hours, minute by minute. The video is synced to local time, making it a functioning timepiece in itself. The Clock also includes a soundscape by Marclay, using rhythmic sounds and music to reflect the passage of time.

Café Kaktus will open earlier than usual on May 30 and will warmly welcome you from 7:30 AM with steaming hot coffee and freshly baked croissants.

Museum admission applies.

Summer Art Camps – June & August 2025
The Magic Workshop 🎨

Spots are filling fast—secure your place in our June sessions today!

This summer, the National Gallery of Iceland invites children aged 7 to 9 to join our fun and imaginative art camps. Each camp runs for four or five days and will be held in both June and August 2025. Please note: some June camps are already full, and others are nearly at capacity.

Workshops take place in the museum’s brand-new art studio on Fríkirkjuvegur, where young artists will dive into the world of visual art through hands-on exploration of current exhibitions. Participants will sharpen their sense of color and form while working with a variety of materials and techniques—from painting to sculpture.

The camps are designed to foster creativity, curiosity, and confidence in engaging with art. Learning happens through experience, conversation, and making.

Each camp concludes with a mini-exhibition where friends and family are invited to view the children's creations and celebrate their achievements.
