The exhbition Kjarval in the East opens at Skaftfell Art Center in Seyðisfjörður June 17th.

Kjarval in the East is an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Iceland in collaboration with Skaftfell – Art Center. It showcases a selection of landscape works by Jóhannes S. Kjarval (1885–1972), most of them drawn from the National Gallery’s collection.

Kjarval’s roots lie in Borgarfjörður eystri, and he returned there often in adulthood, finding endless inspiration in the region’s striking natural beauty. The works on view, created between 1919 and 1960, include oil paintings, watercolors, and prints — each capturing the distinctive spirit of the East Icelandic landscape.

Summer Art Camps – June & August 2025
The Magic Workshop 🎨

Last chance to secure your place in our June sessions!

This summer, the National Gallery of Iceland invites children aged 7 to 9 to join our fun and imaginative art camps. Each camp runs for four or five days and will be held in both June and August 2025. Please note: some June camps are already full, and others are nearly at capacity.

Workshops take place in the museum’s brand-new art studio on Fríkirkjuvegur, where young artists will dive into the world of visual art through hands-on exploration of current exhibitions. Participants will sharpen their sense of color and form while working with a variety of materials and techniques—from painting to sculpture.

The camps are designed to foster creativity, curiosity, and confidence in engaging with art. Learning happens through experience, conversation, and making.

Each camp concludes with a mini-exhibition where friends and family are invited to view the children's creations and celebrate their achievements.
