Programme of the week

Event 06.09.2025 – National Gallery of Iceland
No Longer / Ekki lengur / لَمْ تَعُد
Temporary exhibition of a work by Nermine El Ansari this weekend
On the weekend of September 6–7, the National Gallery of Iceland will host a viewing of the work No Longer / Ekki lengur / لَمْ تَعُد by French-Egyptian artist Nermine El Ansari. The exhibition is part of the solidarity gathering “Nation Against Genocide.”
The video piece was created in direct response to the Israeli military attacks following the Hamas assault on October 7, 2023. Originally part of a larger immersive installation, the work anticipated the suffering and forced displacement of people.
Please note: The work will be on view at the Art Workshop on Fríkirkjuvegur, with free admission for visitors. On Saturday, the exhibition will pause between 2 and 4 p.m. while the Kids’ Club is taking place.

Grandmother, tell me tale, 1930, Tryggvi Magnússon (1900-1960), LÍ 389
The National Gallery of Iceland and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra are joining forces once again with the school concert Stay and turn to stone!, where Iceland’s rich folktale heritage comes to life through storytelling, music, and visual art.
The concert evokes the spirit of old times, when people gathered in the communal living room to hear stories that were exciting, entertaining, frightening, or funny. Listeners will encounter talking animals, magical creatures, ghosts, trolls, elves, and the hidden people. Actor Ólafur Egill Egilsson will serve as host and storyteller, guiding the audience through the program and leading them in communal singing.
The concert will be complemented by an exhibition of selected folktale-inspired works from the National Gallery’s collection, on view at the Culture House on Hverfisgata. In addition, the museum’s education department has produced a high-quality publication to accompany the program, designed as a valuable resource for teachers at all school levels.

Krummi Kids’ Club
Playing with Green Smoke
Krummi Kids’ Club is back after the summer break, and we’re excited to welcome you to the first art workshop of the season on Saturday, from 2–4 PM at the National Gallery of Iceland, Fríkirkjuvegur.
Together we’ll explore the color green through the video work The Green Land by Inuk Silis Høegh and then create our own imaginative landscapes. In the artwork, green symbolizes the four elements—fire, earth, water, and air—appearing as swirling green smoke that winds through the landscape like a living serpent.
Every month, Krummi Kids’ Club offers a lively program where children can discover artworks from the National Gallery’s collection, make their own creations, and enjoy playful moments in an inspiring environment.
Free admission for the whole family!

Courses 2025 – National Gallery of Iceland
Art Courses – Autumn 2025
For children aged 10–12 🎨
An art course focusing on drawing and painting techniques. The works of art on display at the museum will serve as inspiration for creative projects, giving children a unique opportunity to experience and explore art in the museum setting.
The course will place special emphasis on drawing, alongside work with paint, with a strong focus on colour theory. Participants will explore the effects of colour and how it can be used together with drawing to create depth and visual impact. They will gain tools to express what lives in their minds and hearts.
Three-dimensional forms in art will also be explored, experimenting with shapes and abstract forms, as well as positive and negative space in that context. At the end of the course, an exhibition will be held showcasing the children’s work, with the young artists themselves taking part in the exhibition-making process.
We recommend that children wear clothes suitable for painting, splashing, and fun! The course is fully accessible.
