Muggur’s Gravestone
Unveiled After Restoration

On Tuesday, August 26, the gravestone of the artist Guðmundur Thorsteinsson – Muggur (1891–1924) at Hólavallakirkjugarður Cemetery was unveiled following an extensive restoration. The stone was originally erected in 1936 and was designed by the Danish artist Elof Risebye (1892–1961), professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

The restoration was initiated by Muggur’s relatives, descendants of Pétur and Ásthildur Thorsteinsson, and was carried out by conservator Jeannette Castioni.

Steina: Playback
Save the Date!

On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the exhibition Steina: Time Travel opens to the public. The exhibition will be presented across four galleries at the National Gallery of Iceland on Fríkirkjuvegur and four galleries at Reykjavík Art Museum – Hafnarhús on Tryggvagata.

Steina is one of the world’s foremost pioneers in video art and new media, and this will be the first major retrospective of her work in Iceland.

Through her groundbreaking practice, she has uniquely intertwined video art, music, and technology in a deeply creative and visionary way. The exhibition traces Steina’s artistic journey, from her earliest works to the present day, offering a fascinating perspective on the evolution of both technology and art over the past decades.
