Magnús Tómasson

Magnús Tómasson sýndi skúlptúrverkið Herinn sigursæli á einkasýningu árið 1969 í Galleríi SÚM sem var til húsa við Vatnsstíg í Reykjavík. Á sýningunni voru þrívíð verk unnin úr iðnaðarefnum, málmum, járni og plasti. Magnús var einn af frum­kvöðlum ­SÚM-hópsins­ sem var félagsskapur framsækinna listamanna á sjö­unda ára­tugn­um sem vildu víkka út listhugtakið og leiða íslenska myndlist inn á nýjar brautir. Herinn sigursæli er skipaður 12 risastórum húsflugum úr plasti sem mynda herfylkingu með fánabera í fararbroddi. Herinn skálmar fram vígreifur og að því er virðist reiðubúinn til átaka og jafnvel sigurviss. Súrrealísk stærð flugnanna vekuróhug þar sem þær standa á palli með stálplötu. Verkið má túlka á ýmsa vegu en titillinn bendir til þess að það hafi pólitíska skírskotun til þess hernaðarbrölts sem tengdist kalda stríðinu og þá sérstaklega Víetnamstríðinu og vaxandi andúðar á hvers kyns stríðsrekstri á sjöunda áratugnum. Grannir flugufætur og gegnsæir og fínlegir vængir mynda þó andstæðu við harðneskjulega hugmyndina um hernað og stríð. Þannig má greina vissa kaldhæðni í verkinu þar sem hæðst er að múgsefjun og valdabaráttu og hugtakið „að gera ekki flugu mein“ fær hér nýja merkingu þegar flugurnar hafa verið stækkaðar og settar í samhengi hernaðar.
 
Magnús was one of the founding members of the SÚM artist collective. Founded in the sixties, the collective group of progressive and experimental artists aimed to widen the prevailing concept of art and shepherd the Icelandic art scene onto new avenues. In 1969, Magnús held a solo exhibition in Gallery SÚM in Reykjavík, where The Conquering Army was displayed for the first time. The works in the exhibit were made from industrial materials, such as metals, iron and plastic. It comprises 12 plastic figures of houseflies that stand at attention with a flag bearer in front. The army appears defiant and confident, even ready to do battle. The surreal size of the flies standing on a steel-plated pedestal is unnerving. The piece lends itself to many interpretations, but the title suggests a political reference, perhaps in the spirit of the rising opposition to warmongering during the Cold War era, in particular during the Vietnam War. The slender legs and translucent wings of the flies are a delicate juxtaposition to the brutality of war. They lend an ironic tone to the work that mocks the herd behaviour and power struggles of the times. The enlarged scale of the flies that are lined up like a squad of armed soldiers, gives an entirely new meaning to the saying „wouldn‘t hurt a fly“.

Birgir Andrésson

Verkið Sameinaðir stöndum vér  vann Birgir árið 2004, á 60 ára afmæli lýðveldisins. Verkið vísar til þáttaskila í Íslandssögunni sem urðu við hernámið í seinni heimsstyrjöldinni og síðar komu bandaríska hersins við stofnun Atlantshafsbandalagsins árið 1949. Þau nánu tengsl sem Ísland hefur síðan haldið við Bandaríkin og Bretland eru táknuð með lopafánunum: íslenska fánanum efst og bandaríska og breska fyrir neðan, eins og á verðlaunapalli. Kímni Birgis kemur hér vel fram, þar sem Bandaríkin eru lesin sem silfur og Bretland sem brons.
Sameinaðir stöndum vér tengist innsetningunni Nálægð, sem var sýnd á Feneyjatvíæringnum 1995, þar sem handprjónaðir fánar í sauðalitunum voru í aðalhlutverki. Margræðni einkennir bæði þessi verk, en um leið eru þau einstaklega táknræn og auðlesin í sögulegu samhengi liðinnar aldar. Það minnir okkur til dæmis á það á hve miklum hraða nútíminn hélt innreið sína í gamla sveitasamfélagið og hvernig einangrun þess rofnaði. Birgir Andrésson hefur með þessum fánum náð að ramma inn söguleg skil og menningarsögu þjóðarinnar á einstakan hátt og skapað verk sem mun vekja umhugsun og umræðu um íslenska sögu og menningu um ókomna tíð.
 
 
Birgir made the work United We Stand in 2004, the 60th-anniversary year of the foundation of the Republic of Iceland. The work references a landmark in Icelandic history, when the country was occupied by British and then American troops during World War II; this was followed, after the war, to a continuing US military presence after the foundation of NATO in 1949. The close relationship that has since subsisted with the US and UK is signified by Birgir’s flags of Icelandic wool: the Icelandic flag at the top, with the US and UK flags lower down on either side, as on a prizewinners’ podium. Birgir’s humorous approach is manifested in the work, with the US in the position of “silver” and the UK “bronze.”
United We Stand has a clear relationship to Birgir‘s installation Nálægð/Nearness, shown at the Venice Biennale in 1995, in which hand-knitted woollen flags in the natural earthy shades of Icelandic sheep were prominent. Both works are characterised by ambiguity, while at the same time they are exceptionally symbolic and easy to interpret in the historical context of the 20th century. They remind us, for instance, how rapidly the old Icelandic rural society was modernised, and how its isolation came to an end. In this work Birgir Andrésson has succeeded in framing a historic landmark and the history of national culture in a unique way. With works such as United We Stand, Birgir Andrésson has created a permanent legacy which continues to stimulate thought and debate about Icelandic history and culture.
