Thank you to everyone who took part in Sjónarafl – Visual Literacy Training, a course for teachers in North Iceland organised by the National Gallery of Iceland in collaboration with Safnasafnið – the Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum at Svalbarðsströnd, where the exhibition Iceland from Afar is currently on view.
Sjónarafl aims to systematically integrate visual literacy and art history into school education and to deepen students’ knowledge of Iceland’s cultural history and heritage. Visual literacy training also strengthens skills in communication, active listening, conceptual understanding and critical thinking.
Works from the exhibition Iceland from Afar were used as the basis for the visual literacy training. Rich in subject matter and offering many different perspectives for discussion and interpretation, the works provided an engaging starting point for the course.
