The Einar Jónsson Museum, located in the heart of Reykjavík on Skólavörðuholt, is a truly unique destination that offers visitors a rich and layered experience in a historic and atmospheric setting.

The building, Hnitbjörg, was designed by Einar Jónsson himself, who lived there with his wife Anna for several decades. When the museum opened to the public in 1923, it offered—and still offers—a rare glimpse into the inner world of Einar Jónsson, the pioneer of Icelandic sculpture. His art draws deeply on folklore, spiritual ideas, and mysticism, exploring the eternal tension between the physical and the spiritual.

Alongside the exhibition Spirit and Materiality, which offers profound insight into Jónsson’s creative vision, visitors can wander through the sculpture garden behind the museum. There, 26 bronze casts of his works are set throughout a lush, tranquil garden that is open to everyone year-round, day and night. Inside the museum, visitors can also explore the remarkable preserved apartment of Einar and Anna Jónsson, where their original style and personal belongings remain intact.

We warmly welcome all—art enthusiasts, families, and anyone interested in discovering Reykjavík’s history and culture in an unusual and beautiful environment. Come and experience the magic of the Einar Jónsson Museum!
