Distance Makes the Mountains Blue
Jóhannes S. Kjarval grew up in East Iceland and drew inspiration from the region throughout his life. We will explore how he captured Icelandic nature and his childhood surroundings in his art, and then paint mountains in natural hues that remind us of places that are meaningful to us. Perhaps you can see a mountain from your window, from your schoolyard, or on your way home? What landscapes are connected to your own memories?
The Gallery encourages families to visit and view the art on their own terms. We also offer diverse programming on a regular basis with an emphasis on enabling families to enjoy time together in creative ways, whether through live guided tours or custom workshops. All events are advertised specially in connection with exhibitions. The Krummi Kids' Club is a diverse and fun monthly program where kids can learn about the National Gallery's collection, create art, and play in a nurturing environment. The National Gallery of Iceland gives a warm welcome to all children and guardians!
