Book launch – Ásgrímur Jónsson´s artworks of Folklore and Fairytales

The National Gallery of Iceland houses many treasures worth exposing to the daylight and sharing with others. Amongst these are Ásgrímur Jónsson´s artworks of folklore and fairtyles - works which provide an invaluable insight into the nation´s visual heritage. Ásgrímur was the first to visually express the elves, trolls and ghosts that had lived for centuries in the minds of Icelanders. These images were made public in exhibitions and books in the first years of the 20th century.

The book contains a prologue and text by Dagný Heiðdal and photographs of Ásgrímur Jónsson´s images of folklore and fairytales.

Duo Harpverk Concert

They will perform the composition Málverk by Haraldur Vignir Sveinbjörnsson based on Ásgrímur Jónsson´s musical compositions. The piece was specifically arranged for the performers and in honour of the painter. They will also perform the piece Dögun by Vala Gestsdóttir and Skelja by Daníel Bjarnason. The concert will be held in the Reading Room of the House of Collections on Hverfisgata.

„Amusing is the Dark”: Ghost Stories in the National Gallery of Iceland

Ethnographer Dagrún Ósk Jónsdóttir tells stories of ghosts and the different types of ghosts that can be found in Iceland, including zombies, apparitions, ghosts of infanticide and the ghosts of misers. Some choice ghost stories will be told. Dagrún will also teach us some practical details, such as how to recognize the ghosts one might meet during one´s life, how to raise them and how to free oneself from their haunting.

All are welcome who dare!
