Stóð eg úti í tunglsljósi

Hér er myndefnið sótt í kvæðið Álfareiðineftir Heinrich

Heine í þýðingu Jónasar Hallgrímssonar frá árinu 1843.

Kvæðið hafa Íslendingar sungið fullum hálsi við áramót,

þar sem sögur segja að álfar fari á stjá og flytji búferlum.

Það gerist margt sem við sjáum ekki en skynjum ef til vill.

Sitji maður á krossgötum þyrpast álfar að og þá er betra

að vanda sig og láta ekki ginnast og segja er dagur rennur:

„Guð sé lof, nú er dagur um allt loft.“ Við sjáum álfa þeysa

yfir grundir á hvítum hestum og álfadrottninguna ljósklædda

teygja fram höndina í átt að manni sem stendur

í skjóli milli trjánna og fylgist með. Bjartir litir fanga augað

þar sem lúðrablástur hljómar undir hálfmána sem hangir

yfir trjátoppunum. Allt er þetta í anda ævintýrisins sem

menn upplifa við flutning lagsins. Sterk útlínuteikning í anda

þýska expressjónismans einkennir málverkið sem minnir á

sviðsmynd úr leikhúsi þar sem tunglsljósið lýsir upp sviðið.

 

The inspiration of the painting is the poem Álfareiðin(The

Ride of the Elves), a translation (1843) by Romantic poet

Jónas Hallgrímsson of Heinrich Heine’s Reisebilder (1826–1827).

This song is heartily sung by Icelanders at the New Year,

when, according to folklore, elves are on the move, going to

their new homes. Much happens on New Year’s Night that

we do not see, but may perhaps perceive. If a human sits

at a crossroads they may see elves gathering – and then it

is best to take care not to be deceived by them. When the

new day dawns it is customary to say: “God be praised,

now the daylight is everywhere.” Here we see elves riding

across the green countryside on white horses, and the

elven queen in her light-coloured robes stretches out a

hand to a human who stands among the trees, watching.

Bright colours catch the eye as horns are played beneath a

crescent moon that hangs over the treetops. This is all in

harmony with the fairytale ambiance of the song. Strongly drawn

outlines in the style of German Expressionism

characterise the painting, which is reminiscent of a stage

set, where the moon illuminates the stage.
